Libraries and the Communication of Scholarship: Changing Times, Changing Roles
David Ruddy is Director of Scholarly Communications Services, Cornell University Library. He is responsible for user support and operational management of several Library repositories, including Project Euclid, arXiv.org, and eCommons (Cornell’s institutional repository). His group focuses on applying and supporting technology and business solutions that facilitate innovation, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability in the communication of scholarly research. He holds an M.A., M.S., and Ph.D., all from the University of Michigan.

Bruce Antelman is the founder and president of Information Express and ThinkLoud. He has been active in scientific publishing for over 20 years. His first company, Information Express (IE), developed its first commercial web presence in 1994 and remains a leader in online document delivery, supporting corporate and academic institutions worldwide.
In response to the amount of scientific and academic information being published, ThinkLoud was formed to help readers identify the best literature in a particular field. In conjunction with the ACM, ThinkLoud offers Computing Reviews to help readers find books and articles most relevant to their work and research.
Bruce lives in Palo Alto and New York City. He attended Reed College and Stanford University.

Ms Helen Livingston has been University Librarian at the University of South Australia since March 2005. Helen is currently on study leave completing her Masters in Librarianship and also working on a Doctorate in Information Technology Management. Helen has held numerous positions in Libraries and Information Services mostly in educational settings, but also with some stints in commercial IT.
Helen wears many hats within the University of South Australia, she is responsible for the University Copyright Office and is also a course coordinator for 2 courses within the Information Management postgraduate program.
Helen’s broad expertise in a number of areas such as digital repositories, information access and organisation, and library management has precipitated her involvement in a number of key national and international library committees. Helen has also presented at international and national conferences, and has undertaken numerous consultancies for institutions across the country.

Paul Gandel is a professor and Director of the Doctorate of Professional Studies program in the School of Information Studies, Syracuse University.
Previously he served as the Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Syracuse University. As Chief Information Officer he was responsible for all aspects for information technology and information service–computer services, voice and data networking, instructional services, business process improvement, and distance learning. During his tenure as CIO he was instrumental in modernizing the University’s technology infrastructure and IT support services to ensure that SU remain competitive with the growing demands of providing high-quality information resources for research, teaching, and student learning environments. He was also responsible for initiating and developing the Green Data Center at Syracuse, one of the “greenest” data centers in the world.
Before coming to Syracuse University, Gandel was Vice Provost and Dean of Libraries at University of Rhode Island. Before Rhode Island, Gandel was Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer at the Ohio University, Senior Director of Academic Computing and Associate Professor of Library Science at the University of North Texas, Supervisor of the Computing Technology Group at Bell Laboratories, Head of Media Services at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, and Director of the Research Library at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. He has also done work internationally as a Senior Consultant and Interim CIO for Singapore Management University.
Gandel has made presentations and published on topics related to the management of information systems, library administration and services, software engineering, and visualization of information.
Dr. Gandel has a Ph.D. in Information Studies from Syracuse University, an M.A. in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin, and an M.F.A. in Photography and B.A. in History from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
